Methodology

EcoAtlas Pro is a curated bio-pharmacological-nutritional graph. It connects ethnobotanical plant uses to phytochemical constituents, gene interactions, diseases, nutrients and supplements through normalized, deterministic identifiers.

What the catalog contains

The catalog currently exposes 20,092 plants, 46,274 phytochemicals, 59,017 genes and 14,256 diseases. Relations include 74,355 ethnobotanical uses, 29,532 plant-to-compound constituent links, 278,257 chemical-gene interactions and 141,557 curated disease associations.

Each entity page is designed to answer three questions: what is it, what is it documented to do, and which molecular or nutritional relationships connect it to other entries.

How relations are built

  • Plant → activity: ethnobotanical uses are kept as documented activities with reference counts and country context when available.
  • Plant → compound: constituent links preserve amount, plant part, chemical class and reference metadata when available.
  • Compound → gene: chemical-gene interactions are filtered to catalog phytochemicals and enriched with interaction counts and supporting literature references.
  • Gene → disease: disease associations include confidence scores and supporting literature references when available.
  • Supplement → nutrient or compound: supplement ingredients are resolved by exact case-insensitive name matching against catalog entities.

Identifiers and reproducibility

Entity IDs are deterministic and stable across re-ingestion. Plants use stable numeric or slug identifiers; compounds, nutrients and supplements use slug-plus-hash identifiers; diseases, symptoms and genes use stable catalog identifiers.

The same input row produces the same primary key, so ingestion can be re-run idempotently without creating duplicate entities.

Quality checks

  • Relation targets must resolve to an existing entity or documented virtual activity.
  • Counts are generated from the loaded catalog, not manually maintained in the UI.
  • Search uses local progressive indexes for fast browser-side results and the API for server-side coverage.
  • Entity pages are prerendered so crawlers and AI assistants can read the content without executing JavaScript.

Limitations

EcoAtlas Pro is a reference catalog, not a clinical recommendation engine. Coverage is uneven: some plants have many constituents and references, while others only have ethnobotanical use records. A relation means an association is documented; it does not prove efficacy, safety, dosage or suitability for an individual.
